05/23/2010 - Tribute Bands or.. you can't get tickets to the real band so go see these guys...they're just like the real thing at 1/10th the price!

I came across a "tribute" band today while on the net. At first blush quite frankly I thought I was looking at the actual band they pay homage to. Then upon closer inspection realized it was a "tribute" band. Now let me say at the onset here that there is a lot of really great music out there and I love hearing a good cover of one of my favorite classic songs...I really do. When I first learned to play guitar I played "other people's" songs. Of course I did...that's part of the learning process...practice something that you know well. And there is a certain satisfaction in playing a song you love note for note.
But to take it to the extent that a band would spend the time and money that it would take to completely copy in every detail down to wardrobe an existing band strikes me as odd. To practice licks for hours and hours to get them down to a "T" instead of creating their own art is sad commentary on what they think of their own ability and creativity. If they're that good (and some of them are!) I would love to hear what these bands can write on their own. I have a feeling that if they took a break from being the "ultimate fan" and started to be "fellow musicians" they might accomplish two things. 1. A feeling that they truly contributed to the art form they love so much and 2: They may write the next "classic" hit that will be remembered and played by other new bands (until the new bands start writing their own songs). Once again, I'm not talking about doing a cover. There are excellent cover bands out there and they do great sets. What I'm talking about here is completely duplicating another artist's "life". Music, looks, clothes, mannerisms, band members, poses in photographs, public behavior...all of it. Remember, we all laugh at Elvis impersonators. And why do we laugh? Because deep down we all know there's only one king.
05/17/2010 - Mick Ronson induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

It's been brought to my attention that there is a petition circulating around the net to induct Mick Ronson into the R&R Hall of Fame. The fact that this is even being questioned is absurd to me. Mick was one of the driving forces behind an entire generation of music. Mick Ronson played with some of the biggest names in Rock and Roll: Bowie, Dylan, Van Morrison, Lou Reed, Ian Hunter, John Cale, T-Bone Burnett, etc etc, the list reads like a who's who of Modern music. The fact that this brilliant musician/composer/producer's induction must be petitioned simply tells me that the R&RHOF doesn't know anything at all about music or who created it. It makes me fear for all the rest that so much deserve to be there and will be overlooked because we didn't know that you had to raise hell and start petitions. I've been a fan of Mick Ronson's for most of my life and if you're a fan too (or you'd just like to slap the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame around because they deserve it) go to http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/Ronno/

05/17/2010 - ChicoNightOut at the Cammies

Had a great time at the Cammies. Saw some great new bands and met great people. Lots of beer, cool T-shirts, film crews, tons of pictures being snapped and Z-Rock was there giving away free CDs! It's good to know that Chico will come out to support their local artists and musicians. Brass Hysteria! was bloody terrific. In fact, we went to see them later Saturday night at The Maltese Taproom's grand re-opening. They do not disappoint! These guys give 110% at their shows. They know how to work a crowd and had them up and dancing as soon as they started to play. We've all seen a guitar player go out into the crowd and I'll tell you a secret: they almost always turn it down because it's very hard to play when there are people dancing within a foot of you...try it sometime! But not Brass Hysteria! Half the band is off stage and in the audience dancing with them and they don't miss a note!!
No matter care "how cool" you think you are, nobody can hold still when Brass Hysteria! takes the stage. See them now before they get "too big for the pond" and move to L.A.
